John Goglia receives the 2020 Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award

IFA Comment: IFA congratulates John. He is an exceptionally worthy recipient of the Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award. John continues to make a significant contributions to aviation safety. We are grateful for John’s support and guidance in all aspects of airworthiness.

The Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Foundation is pleased to recognize the Honorable John J. Goglia with the 2020 Laura Taber Barbour Air Safety Award for his many achievements of the past 6 decades, which substantially improved aviation safety around the world and for his continuing promotion of safety and excellence to future generations of aviation professionals.

HONORABLE  JOHN J. GOGLIA

For his life-long, passionate advocacy and enduring dedication to safety in aviation since he helped first responders retrieve bodies from a plane crash into the harbor near his home more than 6 decades ago. For unparalleled devotion to mentoring professional excellence of aircraft maintenance technicians, and as a strong and consistent voice for safety who became deeply involved in accident and incident investigations, ultimately leading to his Presidential Appointment as the first and only Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic to be a Board Member of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) from 1995-2004.
John Goglia’s passion for safety was obvious as he provided expert details gleaned from 40 years on the flight lines of commercial airlines to NTSB Board Members and staff. His wealth of knowledge infor
med the Department of Defense, the FAA, and others in areas like Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) and best practices in specialized care of aging aircraft. Following the TWA-800 explosion and crash in 1996, he was instrumental in preserving its reconstructed fuselage as a valuable training artifact in the NTSB Training Center.

John Goglia’s enduring devotion as a mentor led to the annual Aerospace Maintenance Competition at the world’s largest gathering of the aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul industry. He co-authored 2 books on Safety Management Systems, is President of the Aerospace Maintenance Council, and presently is a faculty member of Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology in New York. His compassion and empathy for the victims of aviation disasters and their families is well known.
