IndiGo Starts Major Expansion Of Bengaluru MRO Hub

IndiGo has started constructing its much-awaited MRO facility at Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) in Bengaluru.
As it expands its fleet, the Indian airline hopes to achieve self-reliance in aircraft maintenance and reduce foreign currency spending on maintenance of its aircraft as it expands its fleet.
The airline claims the new hangar, built on 31 acres of land, will be one of India’s largest. IndiGo signed a deal with BLR for the land allotment in May 2025.
The facility is expected to be three times bigger than IndiGo’s combined existing MRO facilities in Delhi and Bengaluru. The 12-bay hangar will be able to handle both narrowbodies and widebodies, including IndiGo’s expanding fleet of Airbus A320s and A321XLRs and its future A350s.
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers says the facility will strengthen the airline’s operational presence in Bengaluru. BLR is one of IndiGo’s largest bases with over 200 daily flights. “This is an important step towards shaping the future of Indian aviation by developing a holistic aviation ecosystem in the nation,” Elbers added.
IndiGo expects to complete construction and start operating the facility around the beginning of 2028.
The new facility will also create significant job opportunities in the region. IndiGo has more than 1,000 vacancies for skilled maintenance engineers, technicians, logistics workers and other roles in Bengaluru.
Bengaluru has seen significant aftermarket investment in the last two years. Air India is working on a widebody MRO facility at BLR that will house three widebody hangars and nine widebody hangars across 35 acres. The project is scheduled for completion next year, as is the airline’s new maintenance training organization in Bengaluru.
Earlier this year in Bengaluru, Thales opened an inflight entertainment and services lab and Collins Aerospace opened a new engineering development and test center. Last fall, Indian MRO HaveUs Aerotech opened a 70,000 ft.2 engineering spares warehouse near BLR.
