An Unforgettable Closing to the 2025 ACSF Safety Symposium with Tim and Sheri Lilley
As the 2025 ACSF Safety Symposium came to a close, attendees were deeply moved by a profoundly emotional and impactful presentation from Captain Tim Lilley and Sheri Lilley, parents of First Officer Sam Lilley.
Sam was serving as First Officer on American Airlines Flight 5342, which was tragically involved in a midair collision with a Blackhawk helicopter while on approach to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) earlier this year.
The attention of everyone in the symposium was focused on the Lilleys as they shared the story of their son—his love for aviation, his life, and the tragic circumstances that led to his passing. Their words gave voice to the real and human side of aviation accidents, reminding all of us that behind every safety conversation are lives, families, and futures that matter.
As a 20-year Army aviation veteran, Captain Lilley also offered insight into the safety gaps he believes contributed to the accident—urging the industry to remain vigilant and accountable.
“The participation of Tim and Sheri Lilley was one of the most powerful moments in our Foundation’s history,” said Bryan Burns, President and CEO of ACSF. “Their willingness to speak so soon after such a personal and public loss brought safety out of the theoretical and into the real. We were honored to host them and deeply grateful for their message, which will stay with us as we continue our mission to prevent future tragedies.”
